A Laser powered Assault Rifle has been developed by Chinese researchers according to the South China Morning Post.

The rifle is said to have the capability of burning skin from nearly a kilometre away. According to the newspaper, the weapon is to be deployed by anti-terrorist squads of the Chinese Police.

The weapon is comparable to existing assault rifles in both dimensions and weight and has been constructed to look somewhat similar to conventional weapons.

According to the researchers responsible for the new weapon, it will not be possible for those under fire to determine where the invisible and silent beam came from. In fact burning injuries will look like some kind of accident rather than a targeted attack. There is concern that in the wrong hands the weapon could be used for arson attacks and at the present time there are no international protocols in place regulating the development or use of such a weapon.
